MailScout answers the two questions every mailing starts with: who should get it, and how many homes is that. Pick the people or the places you want to reach and it shows the households, the routes and the postage before you spend a cent.
Three ways to start
1. Tell the owl who you want to reach
Press Generate Mail Plan and describe your mailing in plain words — “families with young kids near my swim school in North Kildonan”. The owl asks a question or two and builds a plan you can use as it is or adjust.

2. Pick an audience
Choose Audience to find neighbourhoods by who lives there, from Statistics Canada’s census. Start from a ready-made group — families with kids, young adults, retirees, affluent homeowners, older homes, new builds or renters — or set the sliders yourself: age, children, seniors, university degrees, French speakers, household income, homeowners, year built, home value and homes needing repairs. MailScout lights up the neighbourhoods that match.

3. Pick a place
Choose Geography to mail an area you already have in mind:
- Custom shape — draw around the streets you want on the map.
- FSA & address — a postal area (the first three characters of a postal code), or everything within a distance of an address.
- Rural municipalities, city wards, provincial ridings and polls, and school divisions and wards.

Fine-tune the count
- Who gets it: include or leave out houses, apartments, businesses and farms.
- Route by route: switch individual Canada Post routes on or off on the map.
- Opt-outs: households that have asked Canada Post not to receive unaddressed mail are already taken out of the counts.
Three ways to mail the same area
Once you’ve picked an area, MailScout shows it side by side as each kind of mail, each counted and priced its own way:
- Neighbourhood Mail goes to every door on the routes you pick, with no names or addresses on the piece, and is booked by the whole route. It’s the lowest-cost way to cover an area. How it compares to the US’s EDDM.
- Postal code mail targets the postal codes in your area rather than whole routes, booked by the whole code.
- Addressed mail goes to each civic address, so every piece can carry a name and its own message.
