If you’ve read about EDDM (Every Door Direct Mail), it’s a United States Postal Service program: it only delivers in the US. To reach every home in a Canadian neighbourhood, the service you want is Canada Post Neighbourhood Mail. Both deliver a piece to every mailbox on the routes you choose without a mailing list or any names on it — but the way you plan, size and send them differs.
Side by side
| EDDM (United States) | Neighbourhood Mail (Canada) | |
|---|---|---|
| Who runs it | United States Postal Service | Canada Post |
| Mailing list | None — addressed to “Postal Customer” | None — delivered to every point of call on the routes you pick |
| How you target | Carrier routes | Letter carrier routes, by area, and by type: houses, apartments, businesses and farms |
| Piece size | Has to be a large “flat” — the reason EDDM postcards are so big | Postcards, flyers, folded pieces and envelopes, in everyday sizes |
| Households that opt out | No opt-out — every address on the route gets one | Households that have asked not to receive unaddressed mail are skipped |
| Who books it | You, or a print and mail provider | A Canada Post commercial account — we book it, prepare it and drop it off for you |
What it means for your mailing
- Don’t size it for EDDM. American templates are built around EDDM’s oversized format. For Neighbourhood Mail a standard postcard or flyer works — tell us your size and we’ll check it.
- Count by route, not by list. You pick the routes; Canada Post delivers to every eligible door on them. MailScout shows each route’s households with opt-outs already removed, so the count you see is the count you pay for.
- Want names on it? That’s addressed mail rather than Neighbourhood Mail — MailScout shows the same area both ways, so you can compare.
