1936
From the ground up
The Standard Press was founded in 1936 as a commercial printing company in Manitoba, and carved out its niche printing cheques, forms and business stationery. Known for craftsmanship and attention to detail, it quickly earned a reputation for high-quality printed materials built around what each business actually needed.
As the company grew it kept refining its processes — investing in new equipment and adopting new techniques for efficiency and precision. With a dedicated, skilled team, The Standard Press became a trusted partner to countless businesses, delivering printing that upheld their professional image and kept their operations running smoothly.
Today that same commitment runs through printing, direct mail and signs, made at 68 Higgins Avenue in Winnipeg — and through an online store where customers plan and order mailings themselves.
1963
Building a printing business
As the business grew, Tony needed more room, and the print shop moved through several homes. In 1963, with the help of Eugene Derksen of Derksen Printers Ltd., he built a shop on Third Street in Beausejour: 1,000 square feet of office and production space, with room to offer more products.
One of them was bank cheques — an exacting process of printing magnetic ink on security paper. The Standard Press was the first in eastern Manitoba to print bank cheques, supplying local businesses and financial institutions with secure cheques. We still excel at custom bank cheques today, with bank scanning equipment that checks every cheque against the banks’ standards.
1984 – 1997
New beginnings
After more than five decades of success, the company was sold to Woldemar Kasdorf in 1984. Woldemar brought a wealth of knowledge from roles at other newspaper and printing companies.
Needing more space, in 1997 the company built a new home within Beausejour at 636 Park Avenue: 4,200 square feet for retail stationery, offices and production. New products came with it — among them the deskin, an ultra-thin mousepad that clung to the desk with advertising printed on its face. The patented product was made in Beausejour and sold around the world, to Australia, the Caribbean, Holland and Spain, for customers including M&M’s (Mars), the NHL, Ford Motor Company and MTS.
2007 – today
Where we are today
The focus in recent years has been efficiency and the latest technology: new Heidelberg presses, a computerized Heidelberg guillotine and folder, a lineup of direct mail equipment, and direct-imaging sign equipment.
In 2007 The Standard Press acquired Gutenberg Press, and a few years later Norlyn Printing, both in Winnipeg — the start of a bigger Winnipeg presence. In 2011 we moved into a larger, more central home at 68 Higgins Avenue, which is now our main office and houses design, printing, direct mail and signs under one roof.
